National Flood Safety
Awareness Week March 15 - 19
The National Flood
Insurance Program (NFIP) has partnered with the
National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
and National Weather Service (NWS) to promote Flood
Safety Awareness Week. This week is a reminder
about how important it is to understand your flood
risk and ways you can safeguard your home and
assets. A flood insurance policy is the best
financial protection against flooding and most
homeowners insurance policies do NOT cover flood
damage.
Every year, communities
are at a heightened flood risk during the spring and
summer months as warm days, heavy rains and severe
storms sweep across the region. Flood
insurance will provide financial protection against
flood damage. To understand your risk of
flooding, read the material on this page as well as
the
NFIP FloodSmart website for more information or
contact our Flood Plain Coordinator listed below.
A new interactive flood
map is now available to help you better understand
your flood risk. This resource depicts how
floods have impacted millions of Americans in recent
years, and provides users with localized flood event
data and damage statistics. For the
interactive map, go to

The City of Bellbrook has beautiful streams and
waterways in and around the area that bring
tremendous value to our community. However, those
streams and waterways can present challenges to
property owners. Property owners in the floodplain
may have to pay for flood insurance. The city
assists residents in providing information on flood
insurance rate maps, flood zones and permitting
requirements for projects located within a 100 year
floodplain. |

New Flood
Insurance Rate Maps
The
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has
undertaken a re-study of the City of Bellbrook’s
floodways and floodplains using new topographic data
and as a result has developed new detailed digital
flood hazard maps, which will be adopted to replace
the existing Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM)
approved in 1977. In addition, the map has changed
from a local community format to a county wide
format. At this time, the new flood maps are
expected to become effective in late 2010.
Copies of preliminary Flood Insurance Rate
Maps (FIRM) are available for review at the
Bellbrook Municipal Building, 15 E. Franklin Street,
2nd floor, Bellbrook. You may review the
FIRMs at the city Administrative Offices during
regular office hours on Mondays through Fridays from
8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. |

Living in a
Floodplain
Every structure within a 100 year floodplain has the
chance of being flooded at some point in time.
However, some structures have a higher chance than
others because of their location. The floodplain
consists of three levels of flooding risk: low,
moderate and high.
-
Low risk means that the chance of the structure being flooded is
small but the risk is not removed;
-
Moderate and high risk
means that there is a more likely chance of
structures being flooded. If you own a home
within the 100 year floodplain and currently
have a mortgage on the structure, you are
required to have flood insurance by federal
law.

Be Prepared in the
Event of a Flood
Purchase Flood Insurance:
If you live within a 100 year floodplain, there is a
26% chance that your home will flood during the life
of a 30-year mortgage; for each year there is at
least a 1% chance of flooding. The City of
Bellbrook is a member in good standing in the
National Flood Insurance Program; therefore flood
insurance for structures within the city can be
purchased through an insurance agent. To find an
agent near you call (800) 427-2419. Please note
that it may take several weeks for a newly purchased
policy to go into effect.
